Fishing scores, suggested windows, species information and forecasts are not promises of fish or determinations that fishing, wading, boating or access is safe or permitted. Nearby or estimated measurements may differ from your reach. FWP regulations, restrictions, closures and lawful access requirements control even when the site does not display them. Check current official requirements before fishing. River currents, cold water, debris, weather and access hazards require separate assessment. Membership supplies information, not a guided outing or rescue service.
We publish research and planning information, not on-site inspections, individualized professional opinions, government determinations, or guarantees of an outcome. An address-specific report or automated recommendation remains information produced from available inputs, not an inspection of that location.
Public records and third-party data may be inaccurate, incomplete, delayed, revised, or unavailable. Models, scores, forecasts, inferred associations and automated summaries can be wrong. A recent retrieval does not mean the underlying record or observation is recent. Missing records or warnings do not establish absence of a hazard, restriction, right or obligation.
Maps, parcel outlines, locations and distances are approximate. Nearby stations and regional datasets may not represent your precise site. Verify the facts needed for your decision with the responsible authority and appropriately qualified professionals.
These tools and their alerts are not emergency monitoring, navigation, evacuation instructions or safety clearance. Do not use them as your sole basis for financial or safety decisions. A favorable score, green color or absence of an alert does not mean that a route, property or activity is safe, open or lawful.

How the almanac reads the river
Conditions intelligence, not a promise of fish. The almanac answers one question, where should I fish today, by reading public instruments and turning them into a decision. It never promises fish. It tells you where conditions favor them, when, and with what rod, and it tells you how sure it is.
Every number says where it came from. Measured means an instrument on that stretch of river. Proxied means the nearest gauge on the same river, with the distance stated and anything in between, a dam or a tributary, named. Estimated means we modeled it, and we say how. Forecast is the National Weather Service. Statistics are the USGS record for the date. Where we have nothing, the page says so rather than filling the gap.
Rules first. Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks' restriction map is read every refresh and sits above the score. A closure removes the score; a hoot-owl restriction blanks the afternoon hours so no best window can land where fishing is not allowed. The almanac is not the regulations. FWP's published regulations, restrictions and closures govern, and you must follow them whether or not the almanac displays them. Check them before you go.
Not a safety service. River conditions change faster than any hourly reading. High water, cold water, debris, weather and access hazards are yours to judge on the bank.
What lives there is not what you will catch. Species shares, typical and largest fish come from FWP electrofishing surveys, filtered to population estimates and matched to the river mile. That is what the sample found, in the year it was taken.
It does not hold your location. "Use my location" is answered in your browser and never sent to us. It names no spots; access is public FWP fishing access sites, and reaches are named by their boundaries.
